Salty was very nervous. The dog leaped up, then began to run in and out of Omar’s cubicle, whining and confused. Omar sat down and began to pray. Just then Salty came in from one of his forays into the main office. He went to Omar and sat right beside him, nudging up against him as close as he could get. It was Salty’s way of telling Omar they had to leave. Omar put the dog’s harness on him, then stepped out into a chaos he could not see but that he knew he had to escape. The firefighters of Ladder Company 6 were preparing for the nine o’clock morning shift change.

Then it was announced that all flights except for those of military planes were grounded throughout the United States. Planes that were already in the air were ordered to land at the nearest airport. International flights on the way to the United States were diverted to Canada. The entire country seemed to be shutting down. President Bush appeared briefly on television from Florida, where he had been visiting a school. But he only repeated what everybody else had already seen. A short time later, it was announced that the president was flying to an air force base in Louisiana rather than returning to Washington.
